Initial training of helping professionals and identities of trainers: a study of teaching and nursing

The Project “Initial training of helping professionals and identities of trainers: a study of teaching and nursing” – FIPAIF - (PTDC/CPE-CED/113015/2009) is a project financed by FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia) under the responsibility of CIIE-FPCEUP (Centro de Investigação e Intervenção Educativas – Faculdade de Psicologia e de Ciências da Educação da Universidade do Porto). FIPAIF has a partnership with ESS – IPVC (Escola Superior de Saúde – Instituto Politécnico de Viana do Castelo) and ESE – IPP (Escola Superior de Educação – Instituto Politécnico do Porto).

FIPAIF initiated research activities on March 2011 and finishes on February 2013.

Helping professions are getting more and more importance in the world and consequently in the professional arena. Nursing and teaching as helping professions share the relationship between professional knowledge and human development which makes these professional activities to be especially complex. The recognized social importance of these two areas of knowledge has dictated their integration in Higher Education and is increasingly raising their professionalization status.

FIPAIF aims to identify concepts, devices, procedures and practices that are able to contribute to the enhancement of teachers ‘and nurses’ initial education and the building of their professional identities in order to develop and positively change future work contexts.

Main goal

  • To identify in the initial education of teachers and nurses aspects that are able to contribute to the improvement of professionalization at this level of education;

General goals

  • To generate new knowledge about teacher trainers’ identities while considering them situated identities;
  • To build new knowledge about education and nursing as helping professions;
  • To make proposals to the organization of teachers’ and nurses’ initial education in order to improve their sense of professionalism.

Methodological Approach

This project is a multi-case study that will apply different research methods: interviews, focus-groups, documents’ analysis and questionnaires.
