The project 'Construction of European Citizenship in Schools' is an initiative of the European Commission, mediated by the European Information Centre Jacques Delors (CIEJD) . It is being developed by the Centre for Educational Research ( CIIE ), Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Porto ( FPCEUP ). The project consists of the promotion of the Educational Action: Case study of the European Union - Culture and Citizenship in schools in all districts of the country.
The aim is to assess the knowledge of young adults in both scientific and vocational routes of Secondary School, in what concerns the various dimensions of citizenship - the process of building the European Union, its institutional architecture, and respective powers and decision-making processes. The project also addresses the exercise of European Citizenship. Moreover, there is the will to promote formative moments with contents and educational activities adequate to young adults, which contribute to deepen their knowledge and acquire new meanings of citizenship. Following this, the project is embodied in a set of - more specific or more transversal – tasks, across three phases: 1) Study of diagnosis; 2) Educational Action ; 3) Impact Assessment.
Contact will be established with at least 800 Secondary School students from schools in all districts of mainland Portugal, and in the Autonomous Regions of the Azores and Madeira.
The project is intended particularly to young adults of the 10th year but it also seeks to involve the educational community. Thus, the Educative Action takes on a celebratory fashion and will be run within the period of one or two school days. Its activities involve collaborative knowledge building in the classroom, interactive targeted search (in a set of advised links) including the use of online educational games on the European Union. The action will result in the realization of a group work on the subjects under study and will culminate in a moment of voting on the best works, which will later on be presented to the community, and shared with the faculty, other students and their families as well as members of local power, the General Council, the City Board of Education and other members of the educational community, who will be invited to come to school for this purpose.
The application of a questionnaire of diagnosis, pre-training, and the second application of the same questionnaire post-training, will enable, respectively, to assess youth a priori knowledge and the impact of training.
All data collected will be analyzed statistically – matching up qualitative and quantitative analysis. The study results will be disseminated by various means. Anonymity, confidentiality and data protection are guaranteed under Law No. 67/ 98.
