Construindo Carreiras: (Re)Desenhar o Percurso Educativo dos Surdos a Partir de Modelos Bilingues

In what concerns the deaf, although the Portuguese legislation is one of the most updated and a follower of the recommendations of several transnational organizations (ONU, UNESCO, European Parliament, Salamanca Declaration), paradoxically, the social and educational politics, that are implemented in practice, don’t let us suppose that.
Through the analysis of several data, we verify that their most elementary citizenship rights are restricted, being denied to them the possibility of making the same academic and social acquisitions of their hearing peers, as well as taking decisions about their educational, social and labor trajectories.
In general terms, with the research we decided to develop, we try to understand, explain and clarify the crucial traces of different educational realities concerning deafness, as much in the national as in the international scope, with the purpose of contributing to the construction of coordinates that allow the marking out of decision making, in short, medium and long terms, promoters of the deaf social inclusion in our country, particularly in what concerns the educational trajectories and the transition and participation processes in adult, social and working life.
This way, in the present work, we try to question the origins of the problems and their effects, through a multirreferencial approach, that allows fitting the problem in a transdisciplinar standpoint. We intend to analyze and discuss, in the light of education sciences and other knowledge areas, the role of the several instances of decision, intervention, negotiation and participation in the different stages of the processes of education, formation and career building. In it, the study constitutes itself in a permanent and mutual interpellation between empiric and theoretical data, raising an update and enhancement along all the work.
From the exploratory point of view, besides the observation in loco of contexts specifically related with the thematic in consideration, of the gathering of documental data (e.g. legislation, norms, orientations and recommendations) and of testimonies (data gathering interviews) about different realities, namely the Portuguese, the American, the Swedish and the Brazilian, among others, we went through experiential data under the form of academic and professional biographies of deaf persons (biographical interviews) and to questionnaires made to individuals from different countries.
From the systematization and analysis of the gathered information, the empiric data are checked, mobilizing the theoretical constructs, giving the possibility to clarify the problem that is being studied and the formulation of propositions for the reconfiguration of the national situation, which suggests, clearly, the necessity to redraw the educational trajectories of the deaf taking into account Bilingual Models.
